Description

Who We Are

Habitat for Humanity Chicago South Suburbs is part of a global, nonprofit housing organization operated on Christian principles that seeks to put God’s love into action by building homes, communities and hope. Habitat for Humanity Chicago South Suburbs is dedicated to eliminating substandard housing locally and worldwide through constructing, rehabilitating and preserving homes; by advocating for fair and just housing policies; and by providing training and access to resources to help families improve their shelter conditions. Habitat for Humanity was founded on the conviction that every man, woman and child should have a simple, durable place to live in dignity and safety, and that decent shelter in decent communities should be a matter of conscience and action for all.

What We Do

Habitat for Humanity Chicago South Suburbs has an open-door policy. All who believe that everyone needs a decent, affordable place to live are welcome to help with the work, regardless of race, religion, age, gender, political views or any of the other distinctions that too often divide people. In short, Habitat welcomes volunteers and supporters from all backgrounds and also serves people in need of decent housing regardless of race or religion. As a matter of policy, Habitat for Humanity International and its affiliated organizations do not proselytize. This means that Habitat will not offer assistance on the expressed or implied condition that people must either adhere to or convert to a particular faith, or listen and respond to messaging designed to induce conversion to a particular faith.

No construction experience is necessary. In fact, most of our volunteers are brand-new to the world of home construction! Simply come ready to learn and Habitat construction staff will guide you from there.

Volunteer day activities can include anything it takes to build a home from start to finish. Typical volunteer activities include: framing, siding, painting, roofing, laying flooring, hanging doors or windows, trim work, finishing, landscaping, and cleaning. We mean it when we say – every single task is critical for the success of our mission.

Volunteer arrival time is between 7:45 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. The workday is from 8:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. Please be punctual so you don’t miss the work-day goals and instructions necessary to accomplish the day’s tasks. Please be sure to arrive with your completed waiver. Minors must have a parent/guardian signature.

The minimum age to volunteer is 18.

Please wear clothing that you do not mind getting dirty or possibly damaged. Sturdy, hard-soled, closed-toed, closed-heeled shoes are required.

Inclement Weather Plan: We strive to provide a volunteer site location and a project overview as far in advance as possible. The building process is fluid, dynamic and constantly changing based on weather conditions and available resources. For this reason, we confirm volunteer site locations no earlier than two weeks from a scheduled build date. Even after designating a volunteer location site, group and individual relocation's will be subject to change up to 24 hours prior to the build date to ensure the best possible experience. Site locations are only changed within 48 hours due to severe weather conditions, permit, and inspection issues that could impact the safety of our volunteers. We confirm the volunteer location and all other project updates to volunteers directly registered in Galaxy. It is important that our volunteers sign up with Galaxy ahead of time to allow for accessible communication.
